Since 2012, he has been engaged with the implementation of open data policy in India, both as a member of DataMeet (the core community of open data advocates and enthusiasts in India), and as a researcher and consultant. He has studied the landscape of government data access and use practices in India as part of the the Open Data Research Network managed by World Wide Web Foundation and supported by IDRC, and has more recently contributed to the International Open Data Charter drafting process. Sumandro has a thorough understanding of the open data for development space, as well as of the various technical aspects of open data discussions.
Sumandro’s academic interests span over topics of history and politics of informatics in India, new media and technology studies, and data infrastructures and economies. He is also keenly interested in computational techniques in arts, humanities, and social research, and emerging methodological questions.
