Melanie Bacou

Agricultural Economist
Biography: Melanie joined HarvestChoice in 2010 as a Agricultural Economist. Her research focuses on the spatial distribution and characteristics of small farm holders in sub-Saharan Africa with a view to better inform poverty-reducing investment programs.

Mel has 15 years of quantitative and statistical analysis and 10 years in the design and development of information systems. She has lead IT implementations and advised governments in the use of ICT for data collection, survey design and analysis, program monitoring & evaluation, knowledge sharing, e-learning and procurement transparency. Mrs. Bacou was ICT/Data Specialist for the Center for Global Trade Analysis (GTAP), the African Development Bank and on several USAID-funded programs (Yemen Partners for Health Reform, Health Systems Action Network).

As an applied economist Mel conducted studies on agricultural productivity, agricultural trade and policy, and public health issues. She has lived and worked in over 10 countries including fragile states (Zimbabwe and Yemen). She received her M. Sc in Agricultural Economics from Purdue University and holds a Master in Business Administration and a German Diplom-Kaufmann from the European School of Management.
